General Comments

This handsome man with the dark, luxurious coat and deeply orange eyes cleaned up well after being rescued from a terrible hoarding situation.  Merlin is still super shy, but he’s beginning to show his spunky side and his personality is emerging now as he comes to understand he is in a safe place with people who will love and care for him.

Since he joined the RESCUE family, Merlin has put on some much needed weight.  Although we’re a little puzzled as to how that happened considering the amount of food that ends up ON his face!  Doesn’t bother him too much considering the happy chirps/meows you hear coming from him as he relishes his meal…probably doesn’t hurt that he knows his new friends will help him clean up after mealtime too!  With that coat of his, Merlin will need daily brushing, preferably with his favorite type of thin wire brush.  He’s very considerate and helpful – hold the brush up and he will rub up against it to clean his own cheeks!  Merlin also enjoys having his forehead brushed and for some reason that’ll occasionally cause him to stick out his tongue!

Merlin, who would once dart away when someone enters the room, is now oftentimes right next to the door as someone enters!  If you take things slowly with him, he’ll become at ease with you in minutes. Once you begin gently petting him, Merlin will increasingly lean into the pet and begin rubbing against your hand.  A loving touch makes him so very happy.  He enjoys gentle massages/petting along his back and ADORES having his head scratched.  Within 5 minutes of this type of interaction, Merlin is purring with all the force of a dull leaf blower.  The energy he exudes by head butting you enthusiastically multiple times to encourage this interaction only results in him falling over on his side where he then allows and even expects you to rub his soft belly! It’s rather sweet; Merlin seems to really like it when you make eye contact with him.

Merlin is beginning to show his spunky side.  Much to our delight he is starting to explore his room, use vertical scratching posts, and sleeping in cozy cat beds!  Even more exciting…Merlin is beginning to play!  Quite the catcher, Merlin loves pitching mice toys around the room.  We say he's like a catcher because he holds the mouse in his paw for quite some time before throwing it in the air. He seems to love this game of fetch that he plays with himself but he also welcomes you to throw mice for him. He still does not understand what pipe cleaners are but loves chewing them.

Merlin has come a very long way in a very short period of time.  We’re so happy that he’s out of a deplorable situation and now has the chance to live up to his full kitty potential.  With time, patience, and lots of love, we know there are even more wonderful traits just waiting to breakthrough his shy exterior.  Please consider opening your home and heart to this precious soul…both you and he will be richly rewarded.
